The brassicas are coming. The brassicas are coming. The brassicas are coming. And yes, that is cause for much excitement!
Now if you’re first response is to say, what’s a brassica, then just think cauliflower, broccoli, Chinese broccoli, cabbage, turnips and all those delicious comfort veggies most of us love! And they’re nearly all here now. The cabbages were the first to appear, with broccoli just starting to show it’s face in the Northern Rivers. The rest shouldn’t be too far behind. That means we’ll be adding them to our Produce Pods over coming weeks, and we’ll give you plenty of ideas on delicious ways to use them.
Here’s more of the fruit and veggies you’re likely to see fresh and local throughout May:
Apples from Stanthorpe are absolutely delicious, as are the pears
Avocados, with Fuerte picking now and other varieties following
Bananas, Cavendish and Lady Finger
Citrus (oranges, mandarin, lemons and limes)
Potatoes, multiple varieties
Spinach and silverbeet
Sweet potato, various colours
Tomatoes, tale end of season for Coopers Shoot
Our local exotic fruit guru, John from Picone Exotics, is nearly all done for his season, which means we won’t be supplying exotics for a few months now (sad face!). But gourmet mushrooms from the Byron Gourmet Mushrooms crew are pumping, with the pearl oysters as pretty to look at as they are delicious to eat.
And time to get nutty, because local pecans and macadamias are harvesting now. Yum!
On the meat front, venison will be back in supply soon, so we’ll be able to offer Fair Game Wild Venison in weekly deliveries soon. If you haven’t tried it, please do – amazing.
