What to find at the markets in April

Corona or not, one thing is for sure. Local growers are starting to get back on their feet after a horror period of drought, fire and flood.

That’s happy news because it means we’re going to be packing our new Produce Pods with some great local fruit and veggies, and it also means that local cafes and restaurants who have turned their hands to takeaway options have some fantastic options to play with.

Here’s some of the fruit and veggies you’re likely to see appearing over coming weeks:

  • Apples, coming in from Stanthorpe are incredible
  • Avocados, with Fuerte picking now
  • Bananas, Cavendish and Lady Finger
  • Beans
  • Carrots
  • Corn
  • Cucumber
  • Eggplant
  • Fennel
  • Garlic
  • Herbs
  • Leeks
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Pears
  • Potatoes, multiple varieties
  • Pumpkin
  • Spring onions
  • Sweet potato, various colours
  • Tomatoes, tale end of season
  • Zucchini

And the good news is that winter crops like cabbage, silverbeet, kale and broccoli are only a few weeks away. Look out for them to starting hitting in late April if we’re lucky.

Our local exotic fruit guru, John from Picone Exotics,  is still picking and has a good supply of pink and white guava as well as other funky things coming through. We’ll keep putting them in Pods to give you some fun to try!

Our friends at Byron Gourmet Mushrooms are still growing their certified organic shrooms. Beautiful. With an egg – from La Finca Booyong of course – and that’s a happy breakfast!

Really you can’t go wrong with a haul of seasonal produce this month, so we’ll keep supplying you with fresh local produce each week. Of course, if you are out and about – in keeping with social distancing regulations of course – then supporting some of the local restaurants who are offering takeaway is another great choice. Supporting local has never been more important. While there’s plenty of great options out there, two of the producer we’ve always worked with have some great options available.

Eltham Valley Pantry is churning out a range of take-home packs that you can collect each day from the Pantry or from Lions Park (on the Lismore-Bangalow Road). Matt and Ash are giving the dishes their usual flair, but really, all you need to know is that you can get their individual pecan pies! Yes please!

And Blue Kitchen Gourmet is doing comfort food like you wouldn’t believe. From their kitchen in Lismore, Fran and Jamie are dishing up everything from mac’n’cheese to lasagna to their always popular pies and sausage rolls. Sometimes, these times, we all need a little food-hug!

Like always, whatever you’re doing in these unusual times, just make sure you’re eating real food, from real people at real places.
