The army of local growers, farmers and producers we’re connected with always seem to have so much going on that even I struggle to keep up with it all. I love hearing their news though, so sharing it brightens my day! Here’s a few tidbits for you to enjoy as well.
Up north, the folks behind Dona Cholita have taken their tortilla love to a new level, opening Mercado Juarez, a Mexican takeaway food joint in Burringbar. Think tacos, quesadillas, totopos and more. For now, it’s only open Fridays from 3-7pm but I’m sure that’ll change down the track.
In the same neck of the woods, the brilliant Husk Distillers have started another massive project. While it’s only been a minute since their beautiful new distillery opened, they’ve already started construction on a new barrel house and tank farm. It’ll give them a 1000 barrel barrel house and eventually more fermentation capacity. And you know what that means… More rum! Speaking of which, we’re nearly sold out of the last release of Bam Bam, so get in quick if you want a bottle.
And local TV star Bec Zentveld likes to grow and roast a bit of coffee in her spare time! I’m teasing a little because Bec and Zentveld’s Coffee have featured in not one but two recent national TV showings. The plantation was part of a recent episode of ABC’s Escape from the City, showcasing the locally grown coffee. You can watch the episode online on iView. Hot on the footsteps of that show, came a series of live crosses to The Today Show as part of Aussie Artisan Food Week. Great to see local producers being highlighted.
Fair Game Wild Venison took out Gold in the annual Delicious magazine’s Produce Awards for 2020. That’s a huge accolade for Jonas, and well deserved.
Byron Gourmet Pasta’s new pasta bar in town has opened, and while I haven’t hit it yet, I can only imagine it will be fantastic. Keep an eye for it on Lawson Street in town, opposite The Balcony.
And for our friends in Queensland who can’t travel the border (don’t worry, we all share the frustration), the good news from Warren at Local Dorper Lamb is that his delivery runs to the Gold Coast continue, which means you can get you fix of spectacular lamb easily. Head over to their Instagram or Facebook to find out when he’ll be delivering.
You’ve heard of camping under the stars, but how about camping under the pecans? Ash and Matt over at Barefoot Farm now how options available for you to camp on the working pecan farm. Or if roughing it isn’t quite your style, they’ve also teamed up with local outfit One Lazy Sunday to offer the option of a luxury Airstream instead. Hello flushing toilet and hot water! Sounds like a great idea for those visiting the region, and the perfect location to go on a DIY hinterland tour from – luckily we’ve got all the inspo you need on that front!
